The Fall of the Xitsalala Male Leopard
A dramatic and ultimately tragic confrontation unfolded recently on the Arathusa Safari Lodge traverse, resulting in the death of the Xitsalala male leopard.
Xitsalala was a relatively young male, around five or six years old. He was most often seen near the reserve’s gate, still nomadic and not yet fully established in a territory of his own. Recently, we’ve observed several males around Buffelshoek starting to push further south, possibly contributing to territorial pressure on Xitsalala. In response, he appears to have moved westward, farther than we’d ever previously recorded.
The confrontation between Xitsalala, Tortoise Pan and Tiyani
On the day of the incident, Xitsalala encountered either Tortoise Pan, Tiyani, or both. Tiyani means ‘strong one’ in Shangaan. She was born in May 2015 to Salayexe, west of Arathusa Safari Lodge, and was sired by Tingana. The Tortoise Pan male was born in 2016.
It’s likely that Xitsalala was attacked by both leopards in succession. Tiyani, a fiercely protective mother, would have intervened out of instinct to safeguard her cub. Tortoise Pan, on the other hand, would have acted out of territorial defense.
There is speculation as to whether Tortoise Pan recognises Tiyani as a female he has mated with, or possibly even the mother of his cub. While this can’t be confirmed, there has been recent footage of him acknowledging the cub – not engaging in play, but showing interest and tolerance, which is significant behaviour from a dominant male.
The aftermath
Following the confrontation, it was clear that Xitsalala had sustained serious injuries. He struggled to walk, and guides suspected a puncture wound to the skull. Tragically, he succumbed to his injuries later that same day.
In the wild, the death of a leopard does not go unnoticed. Hyenas – opportunistic and ever-present – will quickly locate and scavenge the carcass, leaving little behind.
Xitsalala’s death is a somber reminder of the harsh realities of life in the bush. His journey, though ultimately cut short, told the story of a young male seeking his place in a landscape ruled by powerful rivals.
