The recommended way to arrive

The simplest and most seamless way to reach Arathusa is by air. Federal Air operates a daily scheduled flight from OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg, landing directly at the Arathusa Airfield – a private runway just five minutes from the lodge. From there, you are transferred to the lodge in an open safari vehicle. Your safari begins on landing.

The flight takes approximately 1.5 hours and can be booked directly with us. Please note that Federal Air requires a minimum of four days’ lead time for all bookings.

Flights also connect through Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport (Nelspruit) and Hoedspruit Airport, from where road transfers to the lodge can be arranged.

We’ll gladly assist with flight bookings and connections.

By Charter Flight

By Charter Flight

Private charter flights can be arranged directly to and from the Arathusa Airfield. This is a popular option for guests travelling in small groups or those seeking a fully bespoke journey from departure to arrival.

Please note that all flights must land and depart outside of game drive times, between 11:00 and 15:00
(South African time).

We are happy to assist with charter arrangements and recommendations.

By Road

Arathusa is accessible by road transfer or self-drive. Road transfers can be arranged through us, or via our preferred transfer partners.

If You Are Self-Driving

Please note the following before you travel:

  • Use Gowrie Gate only – other gates do not service Arathusa and may add several hours to your journey

  • Do not follow GPS quickest-route directions – many prescribed roads are not navigable and can result in significant delays

  • A high-clearance vehicle is recommended, though 2WD vehicles can access the lodge
  • Plan to arrive before 15:30 to join the afternoon game drive – check-in is from 12:00

Gate fees apply on entry to the Sabi Sand Game Reserve. These are once-off fees for self-drive guests and road transfers, and are included automatically when booking a road transfer through Arathusa.

Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

There are three main routes to the lodge, depending on your travel preference:

  • Federal Air direct shuttle. A daily scheduled flight from OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg, landing on the Arathusa Airstrip. This is the most direct option and takes approximately one hour. The lodge is a short drive from the airstrip.
  • Fly via Nelspruit (KMIA) or Hoedspruit (HDS). Domestic flights from Johannesburg or Cape Town to either airport, followed by a light aircraft transfer (via CessZani from Nelspruit) or a road transfer from Hoedspruit.
  • Self-drive or road transfer from Johannesburg. Approximately seven hours by road, entering the reserve via the Gowrie Gate.

Our reservations team can talk you through the options and help arrange the route that suits you best.

The Arathusa Airstrip is a tarred bush runway located in the northern Sabi Sand, used by scheduled and charter flights bringing guests into the reserve. It has no terminal building, no fuel facilities, and no on-site staff, which is typical of bush airstrips in the region.

Landings are permitted between 11h00 and 15h00 South African time only, to preserve the quiet of the reserve. If you are chartering a private aircraft, your pilot will need to coordinate with the lodge in advance and complete an indemnity form before arrival. Federal Air and CessZani are both familiar with the airstrip and handle these arrangements directly.

If you are not flying directly into the Arathusa Airstrip, a road transfer will be needed between your airport and the lodge, or between nearby airports and the reserve.

We do not handle road transfers directly, but we work closely with two established transfer partners we recommend to our guests:

  • Sable Tours. res@sabletours.co.za
  • Osprey Tours. bookings@ospreytours.co.za

Both are experienced, reliable, and familiar with the Sabi Sand. Please let us know if you would like us to help coordinate a transfer on your behalf.

Yes, though with a few specifics worth knowing in advance.

The main route from Johannesburg is straightforward. The N4 and R40 are well-maintained tarred national roads, and most of the seven-hour drive is easy going. The final stretch from the R40 to the Gowrie Gate passes through rural communities where livestock, pedestrians, and slower-moving vehicles are a normal part of the road, so a cautious, unhurried pace is important.

One section does warrant specific attention. The road between Hoedspruit and Arathusa, particularly the stretch from the Viva Petrol Station toward Gottenberg and Manyeleti, is in poor condition with significant potholes and uneven surfaces. Please drive slowly and carefully through this section.

Inside the reserve, the roads are unpaved but well maintained. A high-clearance sedan or SUV is recommended, and a 4×4 is not required. Please drive slowly once inside the reserve, as wildlife has right of way and can appear at any time.

It is best to arrive before 15h30 to join the afternoon game drive, though check-in is from 12h00. The Gowrie Gate closes at sunset, so please plan your arrival accordingly.

Please do not. This is one of the most important pieces of advice we can give self-driving guests.

GPS applications routinely suggest a “quickest route” to Arathusa’s coordinates that leads guests to the wrong gates, including entry gates for the Kruger National Park or Sabi Sand gates that do not service our part of the reserve. Some of these routes involve river crossings that are impassable. Guests who follow GPS without reference to our directions commonly lose up to three hours and occasionally end up lost in the bush.

We will send you detailed, turn-by-turn directions when your booking is confirmed, and we ask that you follow those directions rather than any GPS suggestion, even if the GPS appears to offer a faster alternative.

Federal Air operates small aircraft, and a strict luggage policy applies:

  • A maximum of 20 kilograms per person, including hand luggage
  • Soft bags only. Hard suitcases cannot be accommodated due to the shape of the aircraft hold

If you are arriving in South Africa on an international flight with a hard suitcase, Federal Air offers complimentary luggage storage at their Johannesburg (OR Tambo) and Nelspruit lounges for return flights booked directly with them. A small storage fee applies for single-leg bookings.

Flights into and out of the Arathusa Airstrip are weather-dependent, and safety takes precedence over schedule. If conditions prevent a safe landing or take-off, Federal Air will make alternative arrangements, typically a road transfer, to get you to or from the lodge.

Please check your email the evening before your flight for any timing or routing updates from Federal Air. In rare cases of cancelled flights, the lodge or guest will receive a full refund, and any subsequent road transfer is arranged separately.
