Yes. The Sabi Sand Nature Reserve is a privately owned and managed conservation area, and two separate charges apply in addition to your accommodation rate. Both are set and collected on behalf of the reserve rather than the lodge:

  • Sabi Sand Gate Fee. A once-off fee charged on entry to the reserve, payable per vehicle and per person. This applies to self-drive guests and to road transfers booked through third parties. If you book your road transfer directly through Arathusa, the gate fee is included automatically. If you arrive by air, the gate fee does not apply.
  • Guest Conservation Contribution. A mandatory daily levy added to your accommodation invoice and payable on check-out. This contribution supports conservation initiatives across the reserve, with a particular focus on anti-poaching operations.

Current amounts are confirmed on your booking invoice. Both are set by the Sabi Sand and are subject to change without notice.

A 50% deposit secures your reservation, with the balance due prior to arrival. For bookings made more than 61 days before arrival, we are able to hold the space provisionally for up to 30 days before a deposit is required.

Payments can be made by secure credit card link or electronic bank transfer. International bank transfer details are available from our reservations team on request, and any bank charges or foreign transaction fees are for the guest’s account.

Our standard cancellation policy is as follows:

  • More than 90 days before arrival. No cancellation fee
  • 90 to 60 days before arrival. 10% of the accommodation charge
  • 60 to 30 days before arrival. 25% of the accommodation charge
  • 30 to 7 days before arrival. 50% of the accommodation charge
  • Less than 7 days before arrival. 100% of the accommodation charge

Group bookings of eight or more guests are subject to a separate cancellation schedule, which your reservations consultant will share with you at the time of booking.

We strongly recommend comprehensive travel insurance that includes cancellation, curtailment, and medical cover.

Yes. A 50% single supplement applies to all suites when occupied by a single guest. This is a standard industry policy and reflects the fact that rates are based on two guests sharing a suite.

From time to time, we are able to offer a waived single supplement on direct bookings, at our discretion and based on availability. Please ask our reservations team when you enquire.

Tipping is entirely discretionary and based on personal appreciation for service. For guidance, the following is customary at Arathusa:

  • Rangers. R250 to R700 per guest per day
  • Trackers. Typically 50% of the ranger’s gratuity
  • Lodge team. A pooled gratuity shared among approximately 30 team members

Gratuities are usually given at the end of your stay rather than daily. There is no obligation, and our team would never expect it.

Yes, we strongly recommend comprehensive travel insurance for all guests, and it is not included in your rate. Cover should ideally include:

  • Trip cancellation and curtailment
  • Medical emergencies and evacuation
  • Lost or delayed baggage
  • A “cancel for any reason” benefit where available

Because Arathusa is in a remote wilderness area, any medical treatment, evacuation, or emergency transport during your stay is for your own or your insurer’s account. Arathusa holds Public Liability Insurance, which applies only where the lodge is found to have been negligent.
